Welcome
Welcome! My name is Gabrielle Tyer, and I am a graduate candidate at Johns Hopkins University School of Education pursuing a Master of Science in Education. I received my Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Rhode Island. During my term with Teach for America, I taught 7th-grade science and 5th-grade math, respectively, at Achievement First Bridgeport Academy. Following my completion of Teach for America, I returned to Rhode Island to teach 5th-grade math at Achievement First Providence Mayoral Middle School. Although I have worked for the same charter network, each school operates on a different school model - Achievement First's standard model and Achievement First's Greenfield model. These models differ in their offerings of enrichment, class sizes, innovative teaching methods, and time allocated to social-emotional learning. While our standard model runs more like a traditional school, the Greenfield model offers students participation in two different enrichments each day (physical and non-physical), class sizes of 15-18 students, self-directed learning, and goal team time at the start of each day. During goal team time, students work with their goal coach to check-in and development personal relationships. A significant component of this curriculum is student participation in circle check-ins. It is from these experiences that I have developed my core beliefs as an educator that every student deserves a quality education and can succeed.
